The Itinerary

Day 1: Wellington to Upper Hutt (67km)

Miramar Peninsula: Begin by riding along Wellington’s high-quality, sealed coastal bike paths. Enjoy scenic views as you loop through the Miramar Peninsula, passing Lyall Bay, a popular spot for surfing and plane spotting.

Te Ara Tupua: Head north out of the city along urban paths to the new Te Ara Tupua trail toward Petone. This area features significant cultural points and resting stops.

Hutt River Trail: Continue onto the Remutaka Cycle Trail along the Hutt River. This path is away from traffic, offering an easy, relaxed ride. Consider a stop at The Dowse museum.

Arrival in Upper Hutt: Spend the night at a quality motel lodge in Trentham. Options for dinner include room service, local pub fare, or visiting the nearby Brewtown, a hub of bars and restaurants. Taxi and Uber services are available if you prefer not to bike in the evening.

Day 2: The Remutaka Incline to Greytown (65km)

Morning Setup: Enjoy a continental or cooked breakfast and a packed lunch provided by the lodge. Your luggage will be transferred back to our Wellington store or your chosen hotel.

The Incline: After riding the final stretch of the Hutt River trail and quiet backroads, you will tackle the highlight of the trail: the Remutaka Incline. This is a steady, packed-gravel climb along an old railway track through native forest. Expect historical artifacts, historic rail bridges, a tunnel crossing (remember your lights!), a suspension bridge, and scenic view points.

Toward the Wairarapa: Descend through the forest to Cross Creek, then ride via road to Featherston. From there, take the Tauwharenikau trail to Greytown, a historic village perfect for exploring artisan shops and cafes before catching the late afternoon train back to Wellington.
